3 methods:

1) clip in: these clip in, can be quite fiddly but are cheaper.

2) glue/bond: strand on strand and glued in wefts of hair (weft being long strips of hair tht can be cut to size), can damage hair due to the glue and chemicals used to remove it. can also cause bald spots due to pulling. also have to avoid brushing hair nr roots, use special shampoo and can be expensive.

3) weave/sewn: ur own hair is braided, weft sewn in. tends to be cheaper, no chemicals, less likely to damage. also can use normal shampoo. gives hair chance to grow as its not bein exposed to daily wear and tare. BUT...it can cause damage if there is uneven tension (certain points of braids pulled tighter).
